Description
Two petitions from early January 1837, signed by over 50 citizens of Rhode Island, ask members of the General Assembly to instruct the state’s U.S. Senators and Congressmen to work towards the abolition of slavery and the slave trade in the District of Columbia. These Rhode Islanders clearly believed that Congress had the power under the 1787 Constitution to end slavery in D.C.
