Description
Mark: S : C A SE Y, capitals with a colon, in a rectangle on the bottom.
Engraved: S S E
Exhibited: Early American Silver from the Collection of Cornelius C. Moore; The Rhode Island Historical Society; Providence, Rhode Island; January, 1961. Salve Regina College; Newport, Rhode Island; May 17, 1964. The New England Silversmith; Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design; Providence, Rhode Island; October 23 - November 28, 1965; no. 248.
Dimensions: H. 5 5/8" D. of top 4 3/32" D. of bottom 5 3/32" 28.395 ozt.
This tankard has a cylindrical body which flares slightly outward toward the base. A turned finial rests upon the stepped and domed lid. The thumbpiece, which aided in raising the lid, is of the scroll type. A wedge-shaped and moulded piece of silver extends from the hinge. An S-shaped hollow handle is joined at the lower portion to the body by an elliptical disk. The upper handle body joining shows signs of an old repair and reveals signs of use. The handle terminates in a tip in the shape of a grotesque mask. A tankard very similar to this one is in the collection at the RISD Museum. Engraved just below the wedge-shaped ornamentation on the handle are the initials S S E in block letters. A caster by Casey at the same museum bears the identical initials. |
