Mark: J . C O U B U R N, capital letters, with pellet, located in rectangle left of handle ("N" is incomplete) <br/> Engraved: I*M / to / MD; S CD, TD <br/> Exhibited: The New England Silversmith; Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design; Providence, Rhode Island; October 23-November 28, 1965; no. 47. <br/> Dimensions: H. 8 1/4" D. of bottom 5 1/8" D. of top 3 7/8" 27.045 ozt. <br/> This hearty and solid tankard exhibits tall tapering sides and a moulded rim, midband, and baseband. It has a stepped domed lid surmounted by a bell finial. The scroll handle has an erect scroll thumbpiece and ends in a circular terminal. The handle is connected to the tankard body through the slightly pointed body drop and the elliptical lower body joining. The engraving is I*M, in block letters, on the handle. Located on the sides of the tankard are two more engravings, S CD, in old-style script on one side, and TD, also in old-style script on the other side. |
