Description
Mark: BS, capitals placed in a heart, once on the body near the border, another somewhat erased mark under the thumbpiece
Exhibited: Newton College of the Sacred Heart; Newton, Massachusetts; March 10, 1963; no. 89. Salve Regina College; Newport, Rhode Island; May 17, 1964; no. 89
Dimensions: H. 5 1/4" D. of top 4 1/4" D. of bottom 5" 24.24 ozt.
This Schaats tankard displays all the characteristics seen in his other tankards. Tankards in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at the Museum of the City of New York are very similar to the Moore tankard (Metropolitan Museum Bulletin [November, 1935], p. 221). All three are straight-sided, flat-top tankards in two stages, with a flaring, serrated lid. Their corkscrew thumbpieces extend down to a beaded rat-tail scroll handle with a bewigged female masked terminal. They are also decorated with a moulded baseband. Another tankard in the Mabel Brady Garvan Collection has a similar usage of engraving on the thumbpiece and hinge plate as seen on the other three tankards (Kathryn C. Buhler and Graham Hood, American Silver: Garvan and Other Collections in the Yale University Art Gallery, 2 vols. [New Haven: Yale University Press, 1970], vol. II: Middle Colonies and the South, p. 28, fig. 574). Scratched on the bottom is "February 26 1740." |
