Mark: Simpkins, upper- and lowercase letters, in oval left of handle and on bottom <br/> Engraved: T C E <br/> Exhibited: Newton College of the Sacred Heart; Newton, Massachusetts; March 10, 1963; no. 85. Salve Regina College; Newport, Rhode Island; May 17, 1964; no. 85. The New England Silversmith; Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design; Providence, Rhode Island; October 23-November 28, 1965; no. 180. <br/> Dimensions: H. 9 1/8" D. of bottom 5 3/8" D. of top 4 1/8" 32.4 ozt. <br/> This solid, full-bodied tankard seems to reflect the robust and hardy lives of these colonial people. Its shape is comprised of a tapering body with a moulded rim, midband, and baseband. It has a scroll handle with a scroll thumbpiece and a circular terminal. The lid is domed and stepped with a cast flame finial. The body joining is elliptical with a slightly pointed drop on the body. It is engraved in a triangle of initials, T C E, in block letters, on the handle. It was made for Thomas and Elizabeth Cutts of Maine (Gebelein, January 6, 1954; July 24, 1956; July 6, 1965). |
