Description
Mark: I R, capitals in a rectangle twice on the bottom
Engraved: F R R
Dimensions: H. 1 1/16" D. 8 1/16" 11.2 ozt.
This salver is typical of Joseph Richardson's work as much of his silver was executed in the Rococo manner. The shaped rim of the salver has six asymmetrical shell-like forms each separated by one longer C-scroll centered between two shorter S-scrolls. It is supported by three cabriole legs on double-pad feet placed under alternate shells. The reverse cypher F R R engraved in the center is for Francis and Rebecca Rawle, married in 1756 (Martha Gandy Fales, Joseph Richardson and Family: Philadelphia Silversmiths [Middletown: Wesleyan University Press, 1974], p.110). |
