Mark: W:Cowell, upper- and lowercase script with a colon between, clearly visible on top of the domed center. <br/> Engraved: WIE; A:S; The Gift of Thomas Gray Esq; to Ann Williams Dec; 13, 1770 <br/> Exhibited: Newton College of the Sacred Heart; Newton, Massachusetts; March 10, 1963; no. 116. Salve Regina College; Newport, Rhode Island; May 17, 1964; no. 116. <br/> Dimensions: H. 2 1/8" D. 5 1/3" L. 7 7/8" 8.2ozt. <br/> This porringer has convex sides, a domed center, and a crown-cresting handle. There were relatively few goldsmiths who used this type of handle on porringers. The initials WIE are engraved in block letters on the solid section of the handle near the rim. The initials A:S are engraved in block letters near the three holes at the end of the handle. In later script around the front is engraved "The Gift of Thomas Gray Esq; to Ann Williams Dec; 13, 1770." |
