Mark: IE, capitals with a crown above and fleur-de-lys below, in a shaped shield, placed to the left of the handle and in an erased condition near the top of the body <br/> Engraved: IWR <br/> Exhibited: Newton College of the Sacred Heart; Newton, Massachusetts; March 10, 1963; no. 12. Salve Regina College; Newport, Rhode Island; May 17, 1964; no.12. <br/> Dimensions: H. 2 15/16" D. of base 1 15/16" 2.7ozt <br/> The simple quality of this pepper box stems from its plain cylindrical body with a moulded baseband. The low domed plain pierced cover with moulded sides fits over the body above an applied moulded band. Attached to the side is a scroll strap handle with a slight grip. According to J. Herbert Gebelein, the engraving in block letters, IWR, on the bottom, stands for Joseph and Rebecca Williams (Gebelein, December 2, 1961). The weight is also scratched on the bottom, 02/3. |
