Description
Mark: S S, capitals in a square, placed twice on either side of the handle
Exhibited: Early American Silver from the Collection of Cornelius C. Moore; The Rhode Island Historical Society; Providence, Rhode Island; January 1961; no. 6. The Point Association of Newport; Newport, Rhode Island; July 21, 1962; no. 9.
Dimensions: H. 4 5/16" D. of bottom 4 3/16" D. of top 3 1/2" 11.01 ozt.
This mug is a typical Soumaine mug with straight tapering sides flaring at the rim and a moulded baseband. The mug has a transitional handle which can be seen in the Handbook of American Silver and Pewter Marks by C. Jordan Thorn, page 185, on a mug of Jacob Ten Eyck. The upper part of the handle is attached to the body with two rounded body drops. It has been suggested that the simple lines and squat body show this is an early type of mug (Englewood Antiques Corporation, May 25, 1966). |
