Father Vitie came to Providence College in 1954 and was Director of the Summer School of Theology from 1958 through 1961. Born on February 20, 1904 in Franklinville, NJ, Father Vitie attended primary schools near Philadelphia, PA and Columbus, OH, before confirming his desire to join the Dominican Order. He pursued his academic training for the priesthood in the House of Studies, River Forest, IL, St. Joseph, Somerset, OH, and completed his MA at De Paul University in Chicago, IL.. He was ordained in St. Dominic's Church, Washington, DC. by Archbishop Michael J. Curley of Baltimore, MD, on June 14, 1934.or the next twenty years prior to coming to Providence College, Father Vitie would spend his time teaching at various schools throughout the country. When Father Vitie came to Providence College he was named assistant to Fr. Paul C. McKenna at Guzman Hall, which at that time housed the apostolic school for aspirants of the Dominican Order. In 1958, Fr. Vitie was appointed the director of the Summer School of Sacred Theology, whose duties he administered until 1961. Following the appointment of Father Collins as director of the Summer Theology School, Father Vitie continued his studies and teaching at Providence College until 1969. In June of that year Fr. Vitie assumed the duties as chaplain to the Dominican Nuns of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Monastery in Lancaster, PA. Well beloved by the nuns of the monastery, the sisters were shocked when they witnessed Fr. Vitie taken ill at the lectern while reading the Gospel on February 9, 1980. Later that same day, Father Vitie quietly passed away.
