John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was an American Quaker poet whose work primarily focused on abolitionism, religion, and nature. Among his most well-known works are the patriotic poem Barbara Frietchie, the Civil War-inspired "Song of the Negro Boatmen", and the 1866 narrative poem Snow-Bound. In 2009, Dr. Bruce Graver donated to the Phillips Memorial Library a sizable collection of Whittier manuscripts, first edition publications, and related documents. In this interview, Dr. Graver discusses Whittier's history, publishing practices of the time, and relates how he personally came to start the collection.
