Mark: T . C O V E R L Y, capitals with raised pellet, in a rectangle on the bottom <br/> Engraved: C H M <br/> Exhibited: Early American Silver from the Collection of Cornelius C. Moore; The Rhode Island Historical Society; Providence, Rhode Island; January 1961; no. 19. Salve Regina College; Newport, Rhode Island; May 17, 1964; no. 98. <br/> Dimensions: H. 5 3/16" D. of top 3 1/2" D. of bottom 3 3/8" 12.41 ozt. <br/> Coverly's cann has a bulbous body with a moulded rim and a splayed foot. The double-scroll handle with grip is typical of canns made in the second half of the eighteenth century. The handle is joined to the cann at the top by a projecting circular body and the bottom by an oval disk. The initials C H M, engraved in block letters, are located on the bottom of the cann. A cann very similar to this and a cup, both by Coverly, are in the collection of the RISD museum. |
