Description
Mark: H U R D, in capitals, left of the handle
Engraved: S A P I E N T I A - V I G I L A N T I A -ET. - V I R T U S
Exhibited: Newton College of the Sacred Heart; Newton, Massachusetts; March 10, 1963; no. 99. Salve Regina College; Newport, Rhode Island; May 17, 1964; no. 99.
Dimensions: H. 5" D. of bottom 3 1/4" D. of mouth 3 " 10.235 ozt.
This cann can be described as having a bulbous body tapering to a moulded flaring rim. It is supported by a circular moulded foot. It has a cast scroll handle with an acanthus leaf grip, joined to the body by raised elliptical disks. Engraved on the front of the cann is a shield, added at a later date. The shield has three owls on it. A chevron divides the shield from top to bottom. At the peak of the shield a hand holds a flaming torch. There is a ribbon below the shield which contains a Latin inscription S A P I E N T I A - V I G I L A N T I A -ET. - V I R T U S in capital letters. The shield has a sable ground and the chevron is plain. It was suggested by Morris Cohon that this shield represents the Storey family crest (Morris Cohon & Co., New York, 1954-1969; Englewood Antiques Cp., October 12, 1965), but such a crest is not found in Bolton's American Armory. |
