Description
Mark: P V D, capitals in a trefoil, either side of the handle on the rim, and in a worn condition on the flange
Engraved: A. R. G. W., Nov. 10, 1910
Exhibited: Early American Silver from the Collection of Cornelius C. Moore; The Rhode Island Historical Society; Providence, Rhode Island; January 1961; no. 5. The Point Association of Newport; Newport, Rhode Island; July 21, 1962; no.19. St. Julia's Women's Club; Weston, Massachusetts; May 25, 1966; no. 6.
Dimensions: H. total 4 7/8" H. of bowl 2 1/2" D. of bowl 5 1/2" D. of cover 6 1/4" 17.5 ozt.
This porringer is an unusual piece of New York silver because "covered porringers are rare in American Silver" (Kathryn C. Buhler and Graham Hood, American Silver: Garvin and Other Collections in the Yale University Art Gallery, 2 vols., [New Haven: Yale University Press, 1970], vol. II; Middle Colonies and the South, p.44). In the Garvan Collection there are two covered porringers by John Brevoort (p.84, fig. 639), and other by Peter Van Dyck (p.44, fig 490). The description of the Garvan Peter Van Dyck porringer differs slightly from that of the Moore porringer. The deep bowl of the Moore porringer contrasts with the shallow bowl of the Garvan vessel. Both have a domed center and a similar handle pierced with intricately with hearts, crosses, diamonds, and other geometric shapes. "Peter Van Dyck seems to have used this handle design later in his career" (p. 44). An important difference in the Moore porringer is the embossed flower of eight petals centered on the cover. It is topped with a turned finial. On the front of the porringer is the script engraving "A.R.G.W., Nov. 10 1910." This was placed on top of a worn foliate engraving. |
