Description
Mark:
IE, capitals crowned with a fleur-de-lys below a shaped shield, left of handle; SG, small capitals enclosed in a heart shape, right of handle
Dimensions:
H. 2 5/8" D. of bottom 2 1/2" 2.945 ozt.
The rarity of this piece appears to be in the bearing of two marks. According to J. Herbert Gebelein, joint marking by these two silversmiths seems to be without any known precedent. He goes on to state that this piece is typical of the period, a functional flaring beaker-shaped cup. A moulded baseband decorates the bottom, the handle being formed of a similar strap wire. The peculiar curve in the handle either was intended by the maker or developed with use (Gebelein, 1962). The initials on the bottom are in shaped capitals, TMZ to EM.
